The FAO Director General Jacques Diouf today launched a heartfelt appeal to world leaders to commit 30 billion dollars a year to re-launch agriculture and avert future threats of conflicts over food . In an impassioned speech during the opening ceremony of the Safety Summit food, Diouf pointed out that in 2006 the world has spent 1.2 trillion dollars on arms while food wasted in a single country totaled $ 100 billion worldwide obesity causes excessive fuel consumption of 20 billion dollars.
"Faced with this scenario, how can we explain to people of good sense and good faith that it was not possible to find 30 billion dollars a year to enable 862 million hungry people to enjoy the most basic human right: the right to food and thus the right to life? ", Dr Diouf asked.
"This is the magnitude of resources that could permanently stop the specter of conflicts the food that are looming on the horizon, "he added
